The Donor Task Force, formed by Slovakian Interior Minister Matuš Šutáj-Eštók, is no longer investigating the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets and the Kub air defense system to Ukraine. This decision has been the subject of lengthy criticism from Robert Fico's cabinet. As Aktuality reported on Monday, the Slovakian prosecutor's office has closed the investigation, finding no evidence of criminality in the actions of the previous government.
According to information received by the publication from the prosecutor's office, the investigation failed to establish any harm to Slovakia's state interests during the weapons transfer. There was also no evidence that members of the previous cabinet exceeded their official authority in this process. Previously, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Igor Meliher stated that his ministry considers the transfer of fighter jets and air defense systems to Ukraine an act of sabotage by the previous leadership, and legal proceedings should be initiated against former Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad.
Slovakia completed the transfer of S-300 air defense systems to Ukraine in April 2022. A year later, in April 2023, the transfer of 13 MiG-29 fighters was completed, and in the spring of that year, the republic decided to transfer elements of the Kub air defense system. After Robert Fico's government came to power in the fall of 2023, military aid supplies from state reserves to Ukraine were completely halted.
Fico has repeatedly pointed out that the delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in April 2023 was accompanied by gross violations of Slovakia's constitutional norms. He also condemned the previous government for transferring a fully operational S-300 air defense system, noting that it remains unclear how the country intends to ensure its own air defense in the coming years.
