The head of the Central Bank emphasized that the reduction of the key rate does not mean an easing of monetary conditions in real terms. Inflation expectations are still high

The Bank of Russia today lowered the key rate for the first time in almost three years - from 21% to 20%. According to the head of the regulator Elvira Nabiullina, the Central Bank today chose between maintaining the key rate and reducing it by 0.5% or 1%, there was no talk of a more significant reduction. This was reported by RIA Novosti .

She explained the Central Bank's decision, among other things, by the slowdown in inflation. In particular, the growth of food prices has slowed, Nabiullina said at a press conference. She stressed that the reduction of the key rate does not mean an easing of monetary conditions in real terms. Inflation expectations are still high. The Central Bank does not rule out raising the key rate if price growth accelerates.
