Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Roman Chekushov proposed using biometric data as an alternative way to verify the age of buyers when selling goods with age restrictions. The initiative was voiced in an interview with the TASS agency.
According to the official, the introduction of biometric identification through the Unified Biometric System will allow more effective control over the sale of alcohol, tobacco products and other goods prohibited for minors. This approach will not only limit teenagers' access to age-appropriate goods, but will also become an indicator of the technological development of retail trade.
"This would allow us to cut off sales of goods to those who do not have the right to purchase, for example, due to age restrictions. Biometrics may well be an alternative way to identify buyers," Chekushov said.
The unified biometric system already provides a wide range of services today — from contactless payments to remote business registration and obtaining electronic signatures. Using this platform to control age sales will be a logical expansion of its functionality. In the future, this can completely eliminate the human factor when checking buyers' documents.
It was previously reported that the deadline for foreign citizens to regulate their migration status in the Russian Federation was extended until September 10.
