Ariana Grande’s ‘Hate That I Made You Love Me’ Lyrics Cut Right to the Point

A new Ariana Grande music era is officially upon us. Tonight, the singer debuted “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the first single off her upcoming album, Petal.
At first, Grande appears to express her regret over a relationship in the song, with lyrics like this in the chorus: “Hate that I made you love me / Sorry if I made me your type.” But as the song progresses, it also seems to reflect her complicated feelings about fame and being a public figure who is both adored and disparaged. She sings in the bridge:
I’ve held your projections when you’ve felt so insecureTell me why is it this wayWhy you so hate to see women endureIs it really my faultYou all gave me your heartsOf your own accord?I don’t really think so
It’s an apt preview for Petal, which Grande previously described as “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.” The album drops on July 31, arriving just over two years after Eternal Sunshine, in which she seemed to explore the end of her marriage to Dalton Gomez, newfound romance with Ethan Slater, and the onslaught of public discourse around her personal life.
It’s unclear who exactly inspired “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” but what we do know is that Grande is incredibly proud of the track. Recently on Instagram, she called it “one of my favorite songs I’ll ever write” and shouted out her co-writers Ilya Salmanzadeh and Max Martin, who previously collaborated with the singer on records like Eternal Sunshine, Thank U, Next, and many more.
In addition to releasing Petal, Grande will also embark on tour on June 6 and then star in the film Focker-in-Law in November. Needless to say, it’s going to be another big year for her.

I can’t tell you whyBut something insideIs dancing with fireEyes lit like the skyTurned tears into diamondsGot good at goodbyesJust know that I will find my way from youLike flowers from a tombWhile you decide who you areAnd I can see right throughLike shadows on the moonAnd it’s all bad newsYeah I I IHate that I made you love meSorry if I made me your typeYeah I I hate that I made you love meCause I barely triedWhat’s happening now?You studied my crownAnd borrowed my bodyWarm, kissed by the sunThen cold like the windA bee stuck in honeyKnow that I will find my way from youI guess it’s kinda cuteHow you like me where you areBut I can see right throughJust don’t eclipse the moonCause it’s all bad newsYeah I I IHate that I made you love meSorry if I made me your typeYeah I I hate that I made you love meCause I barely triedI’ve held your projections when you’ve felt so insecureTell me why is it this wayWhy you so hate to see women endureIs it really my faultYou all gave me your heartsOf your own accord?I don’t really think soI I IHate that I made you love meSorry if I made me your typeYeah I I hate that I made you love meCause I barely tried
