MOSCOW, August 17 - RIA Novosti. European Commissioner for the Economy, former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni believes that the recent summit between Russia and the United States in Alaska was a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Of course. I don't know how else to describe the honors, the limousine, the red carpet prepared for the president... A royal reception in exchange for nothing," Gentiloni said in an interview with the Stampa newspaper, answering a journalist's question about whether the outcome of the recent summit was Putin's victory. The European Commissioner emphasized that Trump has always had sympathy for Putin. According to Gentiloni, the results of the summit can be viewed from two sides. "If we are optimists, (the summit ended - ed.) without results. If we are pessimists, - a symbolic humiliation for the West. And in international politics, symbols mean a lot," he added. Earlier, talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump took place in Alaska. The leaders' meeting took place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base. The leaders' narrow-format talks in the "three by three" format lasted two hours and 45 minutes. The meeting was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. The US was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the US leader's special representative Steven Witkoff. The talks in Alaska bring us closer to the necessary decisions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said later. He added that during the talks with President Trump in Alaska, he discussed a possible fair resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. According to Putin, Russia would like to see a speedy end to the fighting in Ukraine, as does the US administration.
