IRKUTSK, August 8 - RIA Novosti. An asteroid flew over the Irkutsk region on Friday night and burned up at an altitude of about 20-30 kilometers above the ground, its bright glow was captured by a number of video cameras, Irkutsk astronomer, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor Sergei Yazev told RIA Novosti. The bright glow was observed by residents of a number of settlements in the Irkutsk region on Friday night. "The bright glowing object, which was captured by a number of video cameras, by its appearance, speed of movement and color is an asteroid about 10 centimeters in size. It was noticed over Irkutsk and Svirsk at 0.21 (19.21 Moscow time), it was observed for about two or three seconds, after which it burned up in the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of about 20-30 kilometers. It is at such altitudes that the maximum brightness of the glow is achieved," the agency's source said. He added that sand-sized particles enter the Earth's atmosphere every day in large quantities, but they all burn up in the upper layers of the atmosphere at an altitude of 80-90 kilometers. "The atmosphere has protected us once again - all the energy of the object, flying twenty times faster than a bullet, went into heating and glowing the air for several seconds. Those who saw the bolide were lucky. I hope they managed to make a wish," the scientist added. He also reported that, according to colleagues from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a magnetic storm is predicted for August 8. It may be the result of the arrival of a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun during the M4.4 flare on August 5.
