Athlete dies during National Trail Ultra Circuit race in Serra da Estrela

A 71-year-old athlete died today in Loriga, in the municipality of Seia, while competing in a National Trail Ultra Circuit event, a source from the Sub-regional Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela told the Lusa news agency.

“It was an athlete in the event who felt unwell and ended up being declared a fatal victim after cardiorespiratory arrest”, in the early afternoon, in the Lagoa do Serrano area, in the parish of Loriga, he explained.

According to the same source, the event was suspended due to “adverse weather conditions, with heavy rain, snow and fog” in Serra da Estrela.

Thirteen operators went to the site, supported by five vehicles.

The athlete's body was transported to the Institute of Legal Medicine at the Guarda hospital.
