MPT wants to defend the environment in the archipelagos

The president of the Movimento Partido da Terra (MPT), Pedro Soares Pimenta, wants to defend decent housing and work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and prioritize the environment and ecology in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
In an interview with the Lusa news agency, the MPT, which is running for the electoral districts of Madeira and the Azores, identifies “some problems in social policies” in Madeira, but defines that there are different realities between the archipelagos that “have to be worked on in a completely different way”.
In the Azores, Pedro Soares Pimenta stated that one of the bets is “sustainable tourism”, so as not to “exhaust the region’s resources” .
“We have several maritime protection zones in the Azores, we want to enhance them, we want to strengthen them. The Azores are a natural landmark ,” he said, adding that in Madeira the party wants to “ combat some wastefulness and nepotism .”
“One of our causes for Madeira is the defense of the population, the defense of social issues, of those who have difficulties, of those who cannot find a home and of those who cannot have decent work,” he added.
Regarding housing, the MPT believes that it is necessary to “take hold of abandoned construction, both by the State and privately owned”, and then “encourage the reconstruction of these buildings and improve their quality”.
The MPT is running in the legislative elections on May 18 in two electoral districts, Madeira and the Azores, and in the remaining 20 districts, it supports the PSD/CDS coalition, adding that the rapprochement could extend to support for the next local elections.
“The Partido da Terra is here, giving its voice of support to a Democratic Alliance, PSD/CDS”, not only to present its causes, in these elections, but also “for the local elections, for future legislative elections and for the future”.
When asked about what distinguishes the MPT from the PSD/CDS coalition, Pedro Soares Pimenta said that the MPT can bring “the environmentalist stamp of environmental protection and animal protection to a future government project”.
The MPT “is a party that wants what the AD also wants, with one difference: we want to present ourselves and we want people to have the true conviction that we are the environmentalist arm that can exist in this coalition and can exist in this future AD government,” he stated.
When questioned about Education, the MPT, which in its program wants to guarantee free university access to all families, argues that, when people cannot bear the costs, the State “ has to step up ”.
“People want to have this training and cannot keep up with the costs of these tuition fees. We have to support these people and we have to support the Portuguese who want to have adequate training,” he added.
In the 2024 legislative elections, the party ran in coalition with the Aliança party and obtained 0.07% of the vote, corresponding to 4,265 votes.
