After proposing a law to regulate the economic activities of big tech, Lula meets with the CEO of TikTok.

Less than a week after submitting a bill to Congress to regulate the economic activities of big tech , President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers' Party) will meet with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew on Monday, the 22nd. The meeting will take place at noon in New York, where Lula will participate in the UN General Assembly in the coming days.
According to research firms, Brazil has the third-highest number of registered users on the short-video network, with around 100 million people. Only the United States and Indonesia have more TikTok users.
The regulatory proposal that also targets TikTok in Brazil will be the topic of Lula's meeting this Monday. The proposal envisages changes to the Brazilian Competition Defense System (SBDC – Law No. 12,529/2011), enabling the creation of new mechanisms to prevent the abuse of economic power by large digital platforms.
The idea is to prevent practices that harm free competition and ensure greater transparency, balance, and freedom of choice, as well as lower prices, for consumers and businesses. The government believes the measure can correct distortions, reduce the cost of services, and preserve room for innovation.
Other activitiesThe appointment with the TikTok CEO is Lula's first official agenda in New York. Later, at 4 p.m. (Brasília time), he will participate in a meeting with leaders from around the world to discuss the Palestinian Question and the Two-State Solution – Israel and the US are boycotting. Also on Monday, at 7 p.m., the president will meet with King Carl XIV Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
On Tuesday 23, the Brazilian president will be the first head of state to address the UN General Assembly, following a tradition dating back to the 1950s.
