There are two ways to pay taxes in installments. The tax authorities explain them.

Did you know that you can pay your taxes in installments? In a post shared on social media, the Tax Authority (AT) explains that "there are two ways" to do so.
1 - On request
"It must be done within 15 days after the payment deadline of the invoice , in person or on the Tax Portal, under Citizens or Companies > Services > Installment Plans > Simulate/Register Request", explains the Tax Authority, adding: " Choose the number of installments. You can indicate up to 36 installments , as long as the monthly value of each one is equal to or greater than 25.50 euros".
Furthermore, you should be aware that the guarantee is waived for orders in which:
- The amount owed is equal to or less than €5,000 (for individuals) and €10,000 (for legal entities); or
- The number of installments required is equal to or less than 12.
2 - Automatic
"The installment plan is created automatically by the services, when a tax debt has not been paid within the deadline and the debtor has not made a request for payment in installments ", the AT further clarifies.
There are also the following conditions:
- The debt must still be under voluntary collection;
- The amount owed must be equal to or less than €5,000 (for individuals) or €10,000 (for legal entities).
What are eligible debts?
According to a Tax Authority information leaflet on the subject, debts related to:
- Personal income tax (IRS);
- Corporate income tax (IRC);
- Value added tax (VAT) - when the settlement is promoted ex officio by the services;
- Municipal tax on onerous property transfers (IMT) - when the settlement is promoted officially by the services;
- Single circulation tax (IUC).
Furthermore, the guarantee will be waived for orders in which:
- the amount owed is equal to or less than €5,000 (individuals) or €10,000 (legal entities); or
- the number of installments required is equal to or less than 12.
Now, "in situations where there is no exemption, it is necessary that, together with the request, a mortgage or autonomous guarantee be offered , namely a bank guarantee or insurance bond", and the "guarantee is provided for the value of the debt and interest on arrears calculated until the end of the term of the payment plan granted".
"The guarantee is constituted to cover the entire period of time granted to make the payment, plus three months, and is presented within 15 days of notification of the installment plan, except in the case of a mortgage, the term of which may be extended up to 30 days", you can read in the same document.
