More than 700 penguins found dead on the coast of São Paulo

The Cananéia Research Institute (IPeC) recorded 739 Magellanic penguins ( Spheniscus magellanicus ) found dead in Cananéia, Iguape and Ilha Comprida, cities on the south coast of São Paulo , between the 15th and 21st of this month.
The animals were in an advanced stage of decomposition, which, according to the institute, makes it difficult to identify the cause of death.
Related news:“Among the hypotheses for these strandings based on necropsies of fresh animals or the clinical condition of live animals, we can mention the effects of migration over long distances, difficulty in finding food, parasitic diseases, infectious conditions and interaction with fishing,” the institute told Agência Brasil .
According to experts, the species is not at risk from events like this. It is estimated that there are 2 to 3 million of these animals in the wild , in large colonies, mainly in Argentina . However, they face risks due to anthropogenic and climatic pressures on their habitat.
IPeC carries out rescues, rehabilitation, and other marine wildlife conservation activities as the civil society organization responsible for the Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project. The institution also ensures the proper disposal of dead marine animals, such as penguins, seals, and whales, that wash up on the region's beaches.
If any marine animal is found weakened in the region of Cananéia, Iguape and Ilha Comprida, the institute can be contacted by telephone (13) 3851-1779, 0800 642 33 41 or by WhatsApp (13) 99691-7851.
