Italy calls Uribe's death a 'tragedy for democracy'

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the death of Colombian senator and opposition presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay "a tragedy for democracy in Latin America."
The Italian politician, who said he received the news of the death that occurred on Monday morning (11) with "deep sadness", said it was "a tragic day for Colombia and for those who fight for freedom and democracy throughout Latin America".
"In this tragic circumstance, Italy stands in solidarity with all the Colombian people, with the family and friends of Miguel Uribe Turbay, condemning this atrocious act of violence and expressing its full support to the entire nation," Tajani wrote in X.
Uribe had been hospitalized in Bogotá since June 7, after being shot in the head and leg while holding an election rally. So far, Colombian police have arrested at least six people allegedly involved in the attack, including a 15-year-old teenager believed to be the shooter.
