Environmental association calls for natural heritage interpretive center in Peniche

Arméria – Peniche Environmental Movement today advocated for the creation of an interpretive center dedicated to the municipality's natural heritage, a concern expressed in its environmental manifesto released today.
"Given the importance of the municipality's natural heritage, which boasts highly significant geological and biological features that have been identified for a long time, this Interpretive Center would serve as a hub for publicizing and promoting this local wealth for the community and visitors," the association stated in a statement sent to Lusa news agency.
The document is the result of concerns expressed by its members over the years.
Arméria also requests that a list of classified natural heritage sites and measures be drawn up for their protection, as well as a ban on climbing in the archaeological sanctuary of Gruta da Furninha.
For the Peniche environmental association, it is necessary to develop integrated initiatives aimed at the recovery and valorization of Papôa, such as restricting traffic in this area, limiting it to a single direction and only for light vehicles, continuing the work of limiting access to the top of all cliffs and installing signage referring to the city's natural heritage.
The creation of new walking trails and the interconnection of cycle paths, the promotion of the use of public transport, the requalification of the Nau dos Corvos viewpoint, the protection of the dunes through, for example, the creation of elevated walkways and the prohibition of vehicle circulation in dune areas are other recommended measures.
In terms of cleanliness, Arméria calls for "more effective and consistent" collection of urban solid waste, a strategy to reduce illegal dumping of rubbish, and the relocation of waste containers or recycling bins away from monuments or iconic locations.
The environmental association also wants to "contain illegal construction in the Almagreira area," north of Baleal beach, increase the number of trees in the municipality's green areas, refurbish existing parks near the city wall to prevent car traffic, and have the Municipal Master Plan approved.
