Casa dos Pobres celebrates 90 years of protecting the elderly with a desire to grow

Coimbra
“Since 1935, our mission has been to welcome the most disadvantaged elderly people. Our mission is to protect the elderly, to give them the quality of life they deserve.” These are the words of Maria Luísa Carvalho, president of the board of directors of Casa dos Pobres de Coimbra. The institution, which began in the Pátio da Inquisition and currently has facilities in São Martinho do Bispo, celebrated its 90th anniversary yesterday. “The city and its citizens joined the project. With their involvement, it was possible to build this house,” the person in charge praised. In a ceremony with a “full house”, the current president highlighted the need to “continue the legacy” of the Casa dos Pobres, “always improving the living conditions of the elderly”.
At the moment, the Casa dos Pobres has a capacity for 63 people and a long waiting list. “Our current capacity is 63 people. It’s at its limit. We update the waiting list every year, and by 2024 it will have exceeded 300 people,” he said.
