In her two previous encounters with the 23-year-old Lys, Świątek, who is just over six months her senior, lost a combined three games. She defeated her 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 16 at the Australian Open this year and 6-1, 6-1 in the same round of 2022 in Stuttgart.

This time, the German from Kyiv won four games – two in each set. In the first set, the competition was more even than the score suggests. Lys moved quickly around the court and managed to get to many of the Pole's seemingly finishing points. Sooner or later, however, Świątek would get those "winners."
Earlier on Friday, Tauson defeated Magdalena Fręch's second-round slayer, Ukrainian Julia Starodubceva, 6-3, 6-0.
Świątek will be playing the 22-year-old Dane for the third time. The Pole won their previous two meetings, including a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the round of 16 at Wimbledon in July.
