Prof. Witold Rzyman, head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical University of Gdańsk, has been recognized by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and awarded the Joseph W. Cullen Award for the prevention and early detection of lung cancer.
The distinction was awarded during the World Lung Cancer Conference in Barcelona, which took place from September 6-9, 2025, according to the Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG).
The IASLC (International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer), which brings together over 10,000 specialists from approximately one hundred countries, has thus recognized the overall achievements of Professor Witold Rzyman in the prevention of malignant chest cancer.
"My work on lung cancer screening programs began in 2007, when we were preparing the first pilot program in Gdańsk. Subsequent initiatives followed, one after another. And suddenly, ten years passed, incredibly quickly. During this time, in Gdańsk, where I work, we managed to build a truly interdisciplinary team – clinicians, biologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists," Professor Rzyman recalled while accepting the award.
Lung cancer screening is a particular area of research for Professor Rzyman. He has gained international recognition for his contributions to the implementation of lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in Poland and worldwide.
He is the author of the Polish consensus on lung cancer screening and the initiator and steering committee member of the pilot screening program in Poland, implemented between 2020 and 2023. He co-creates the Polish population-based lung cancer screening program and actively participates in numerous international initiatives in this area, including the Lung Cancer Policy Network. Since 2025, he has served as a national consultant in thoracic surgery.
He is also one of the leaders of the Gdańsk Lung Cancer Research Group, responsible for biobanking. His research interests also include combination therapy and minimally invasive surgical procedures for chest cancer.
Professor Rzyman is the author of over 122 scientific publications. He serves as deputy editor of International Lung Cancer News, the official news website of the IASLC. He is a member of the IASLC Committee on Early Detection and Screening, as well as the Ad Hoc Committee on Screening of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. (PAP)
