CMKP has published a supplementary nursing course program for midwives – new competencies and professional opportunities

Midwives in Poland will gain entirely new opportunities for professional development. Thanks to the Minister of Health-approved supplementary nursing training program, developed by the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education (CMKP), they will be able to provide healthcare services previously reserved exclusively for nurses. This step not only opens the door for midwives to broader practice but also strengthens the healthcare system.
The postgraduate medical education center's (CMKP) supplementary nursing course program for midwives has been approved by the Minister of Health and will be implemented by regional chambers of nurses and midwives. This course is crucial because it empowers midwives to provide a range of healthcare services previously reserved exclusively for nurses.
Pursuant to Article 5a of the Act on the Nursing and Midwifery Professions, completing a supplementary course broadens midwives’ professional qualifications, enabling them to provide services outside of typical areas of work, such as obstetrics, gynecology, or neonatology.
Thanks to the program, midwives will be able to develop their careers in many new areas of healthcare. The supplementary nursing course for midwives responds to growing staffing and systemic needs. It opens up opportunities for midwives to pursue careers in long-term care, epidemiology, and family nursing, among others.

The substantive decisions regarding the program's format and content were discussed on numerous occasions. Numerous meetings were held with representatives of the Department of Medical Personnel Development at the Ministry of Health and the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives. The program's content evolved several times, with the overarching goal being to achieve high training standards," he emphasizes.
Work on the program began in March 2025 and lasted several months. It was led by Prof. Grażyna Iwanowicz-Palus, MD, PhD, National Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing.
The expert team included national and regional consultants from various fields of nursing, as well as representatives of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives and the CMKP. This broad representation enabled the creation of a program that addresses both the needs of professional practice and the challenges of the healthcare system.
The approval of the program by the Minister of Health and its publication by the CMKP are a milestone in the professional development of midwives in Poland. Expanding their competencies could significantly strengthen the healthcare system, especially in the face of nursing shortages.
As experts emphasize, a supplementary nursing course for midwives is not only an opportunity for the professional community itself, but above all for patients, who will gain access to better qualified medical staff.
