A new idea has been submitted to the President's Office, which is intended to help increase the country's fertility rate. "Fakt" obtained a letter stating that the birth of each child should be accompanied by a state pension and additional pension contributions.
Many experts are increasingly considering how to improve the birth rate in Poland. A citizens' proposal containing a new solution has been submitted to the Chancellery of the President. "Fakt" obtained this publication.
"I have a friend who is 70 years old and, together with his wife, raised four children. My wife worked all her life taking care of the children and, as a result, has a pension of PLN 0. If it weren't for the children, they wouldn't have anything to live on. My friend's pension is PLN 3,300, which, considering the medication and rehabilitation costs, is not enough to live on," wrote the author of the petition cited by the newspaper.
According to the author of the proposal, a woman should be paid extra for giving birth to a child:
- when they give birth to their first child, the support should amount to "1/2 of the minimum wage paid monthly and it should be counted towards the pension";
- when the second child is born, she should receive 100% of the minimum wage;
- when she gives birth to her third child, she should be paid 1 1/2 the minimum wage.
As Fakt calculated, the additional salary – taking into account the current minimum wage of PLN 4,666 gross – would amount to:
- PLN 2,333 - for one child;
- PLN 4,666 - for two children;
- PLN 6,999 - for three children.
According to the proposal's author, mothers could also count on additional pension contributions. If a woman became a mother at age 30 and didn't work until retirement, the contributions would allow for a payment of PLN 600.
"As the content of this petition indicates, the author's primary expectation is to provide retirement income to mothers who raise children throughout their lives and do not work. […] This is a very generous and pro-social proposal. However, the petitioner does not indicate how to finance such benefits or how to ensure equal treatment for people who, for example, pay taxes but choose not to have children," summarized Dr. Marcin Wojewódka from the Pension Institute in an interview with "Fakt."
