Trump on Estonian airspace violation: I'll let you know later

"This could be a big problem," said US President Donald Trump, commenting on the Russian fighter jets' violation of Estonian airspace. He added, however, that he would first need to investigate the matter.

Trump referred to the case of Russian MiG-31s invading Estonian airspace during the presentation of the "Trump golden cards" allowing permanent residence in the US for a payment of $5 million.

"I have to look into this. I'll have a briefing on it in a moment, so I'll let you know tonight or tomorrow," Trump said when asked for comment. He added a moment later: "Well, I don't like it, I don't like it. I don't like it when it happens. It could be a big problem, but I'll let you know later."

The president reiterated his hope that he would be able to end the war in Ukraine despite the "hatred" that divides the leaders of Russia and Ukraine. He also said that his intentions are shared by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, with whom he spoke on Friday.

“Chairman Xi, I’ve talked to him about this, and I believe he would also very much like to see this happen, and I think he will work with us to help make that happen,” Trump said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not mention the war in Ukraine in its statement on the leaders' conversation.

Trump's statement about the incident in Estonia was the first U.S. response to the matter. According to Estonian authorities, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland on Friday morning and remained there for about 12 minutes.

Estonia has decided to submit a request to initiate consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty in connection with the interference of Russian fighter jets in Estonian airspace, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced on Friday in a post on the X platform.
