Today, May 13, at 9:00 sharp, the eighth-grade exams began. On the first day, students will face the Polish language exam. We visited Primary School No. 16 in Przemyśl just before the start of the first such important challenge in the lives of primary school students. The mood was positive, we can only keep our fingers crossed for the results of the competition. Because, as we know, a good result increases the chance of getting into the school of your dreams.
Data obtained from the Education Board in Rzeszów indicate that in the Podkarpackie Province, a total of 20,183 students in 948 schools are taking the eighth-grade exam. In turn, as we learned from the Department of Education of the Przemyśl City Hall, a total of 562 students have registered for the eighth-grade exam in the city of Przemyśl in the 2024/25 school year. The largest number in Primary School No. 16 with Integration Divisions (83 people), which we visited just before the exam tasks began. The smallest number in Primary School No. 7 Special (only 1 person).
The eighth-grade exam is a mandatory exam, which means that every student must take it, but there is no minimum score that should be achieved, so it is impossible to fail the eighth-grade exam. Nevertheless, the result affects the student's future fate when applying for a place in the high school of their dreams.
The exam is exempted by being a laureate and finalist of an Olympiad or competition, and such students will certainly be in schools in the Podkarpacie region. An obstacle may also be illness or a hospital stay, in which case the student can take the exam in a second, June date.
On Wednesday, May 14, eighth graders will take a math test, and on Thursday, May 15, they will take a foreign language exam. All exams are written. A new feature of this year's exam formula is the extension of time for writing. Students have: 150 minutes for Polish, 125 minutes for math, and 110 minutes for a foreign language.
As Katarzyna Kwiatanowska-Rodkiewicz from the Education Board in Rzeszów informed us, English will be taken in schools in the Podkarpacie region by 19,808 eighth-graders, or 98 percent of all candidates. Russian – 1, Russian with Ukrainian as the language of command – 50 (there are 276 Ukrainian citizens), German – 86 students, Spanish – 4, French – 8. Nobody, however, decided to take Italian.
Finally, it is worth adding that getting into your dream high school will be decided not only by the exam results, but also by the grades on your report card converted into points, so there is something to fight for, because those few points up or down may be decisive. Those taking the exam will find out their results on July 4.
