French can access Pornhub and Youporn again, after judge intervenes
French people have regained access to popular porn sites like Pornhub and Youporn. The parent company had taken the sites offline in the country in protest against far-reaching French age verification rules. But a judge suspended the implementation of those rules.
The new rules required users of the sites to prove their age using credit cards or ID. Aylo, the parent company behind the sites, called the system too cumbersome and warned that personal data could end up in the hands of hackers and malicious actors.
A publisher involved went to court. The court decided to suspend the government decision of March. According to the judge, there are "serious doubts" whether the decision is legally possible, in light of the European directive that guarantees the free movement of IT services. The French government does not accept this and has already announced that it will appeal.
