Brazil aims to protect tropical forests worldwide with $125 billion in an experimental fund
- Brazil is setting up a new fund to protect tropical forests ahead of the climate summit in Belém.
- The Netherlands plans to invest €5 million in the new fund, caretaker Minister Sophie Hermans announced.
- Critics see vulnerabilities in the fund, including with regard to controls.
In the lead-up to the climate summit in the Amazon, host country Brazil is launching a new fund for tropical forest protection. The plan has received support, including from the Netherlands, but there are also concerns about the experimental financing structure. "Wall Street bankers get paid first, and only then do the forested countries."
