EU, 'monitor Meta's use of data to train AI'

"We need to be careful to ensure that consumer rights and data privacy are fully respected. For the moment, we have not seen any evidence or indication or element that allows us to think that this is the case. The impression is that the problems related to data access in the case of Meta were not related to the training of artificial intelligence, but to the activity and offers that could be provided to services or consumers". This is what the Vice President of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, said about Meta's decision to train its AI models with public content shared by users in the EU.
"We are trying to ensure that this culture of compliance is increasingly entrenched among the different gatekeepers. And of course we will pay a lot of attention to avoid any kind of breach that could lead to risks or violations of the existing legislation, including data protection," he added, speaking at a hearing at the European Parliament's Internal Market Committee.
