Anti-Mafia Commission and TikTok, an unprecedented alliance for the culture of legality

Shine a light on the use of digital platforms by organized crime and do so above all to promote the culture of legality among the youngest . This is the first objective of the memorandum of understanding signed today in Rome, in the Refectory Hall of Palazzo San Macuto, by the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the phenomenon of the mafia and TikTok Italy.
An important work of contrast to the contents that circulate on the platforms, with videos and messages, aimed at exalting or supporting in a more or less explicit way, organized crime .
The agreement between the Anti-Mafia Commission and TikTok is the result of a long process of discussion and represents an unprecedented initiative in the involvement of digital platforms in the fight against the spread of mafia languages and attitudes. Thanks to a shared training, monitoring and prevention program, this agreement addresses a complex phenomenon with deep cultural and social roots.
Among the actions envisaged in the memorandum of understanding: TikTok will update its internal procedures, in line with its Community Guidelines, to strengthen the detection of any content that praises mafia-like behavior or denigrates the fight against organized crime;
· specific training for the TikTok “Trust & Safety” team, by academic experts and institutional representatives, for the recognition of mafia content also through the use of symbolic and coded languages (hashtags, emojis, music);
· research activities on the use of digital platforms by mafias , in collaboration with qualified third-party bodies;
· establishment of a joint technical-scientific committee for the activation and monitoring of the aforementioned initiatives.
“This protocol represents a strong and concrete signal: the fight against the mafia also passes through digital channels and requires the collaboration of everyone , including institutions and companies” - declared the president of the Anti-Mafia Commission, Chiara Colosimo.
"The signing of this protocol is an important step that adds to our ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe platform for our users and will be crucial to jointly addressing a challenge that affects the entire digital world , laying the foundations for a system based on legality, responsibility and protection as shared values " - commented Enrico Bellini, Head of Institutional Relations, TikTok Southern Europe.
The The protocol will be in force for the entire duration of the XIX Legislature and may be renewed or modified by mutual agreement between the parties.
The hope, repeatedly underlined by President Colosimo, is that other digital platforms will also be associated with this path to extend and strengthen the protocol and give a concrete signal of the fight against crime.
