Schifani in Brussels: meeting with the EU Commission on Sicily's waste management plan.

The President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, met today in Brussels with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Jessika Roswall, to discuss the Regional Waste Management Plan. The meeting, long-scheduled and strongly supported by the governor, represents a crucial step in relations between the Region and the European Union on one of the most strategic issues for the island's future: sustainable waste management.
The meeting focused on aligning the Sicilian plan with EU objectives and regulations, particularly regarding the circular economy, material recovery, and energy recovery from waste through the two planned waste-to-energy plants. Schifani reiterated the regional government's full willingness to collaborate with the European Commission, ensuring transparency, compliance with directives, and determination to proceed along the path outlined.
Commissioner Roswall expressed appreciation for the overall approach of the Plan, both in terms of municipal and special waste management, acknowledging the Region's commitment to modernizing the waste disposal system and promoting a more sustainable development model. The European Commission's official decision on the Plan is expected in the coming weeks.
