"Since 2001, the date of August 8th is recognized as the National Day of Sacrifice Italian work in the world. This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of the tragedy of Marcinelle and the twenty-fourth National Day of sacrifice of Italian workers in the world. "As every year - continues the Head of State - they are renewed memory and emotion for the tragedy of Marcinelle, in which 262 miners lost their lives, one hundred and thirty-six Italians, victims of a fatal accident at work. A tribute that extends to all Italian workers who died in distant places from Italy, mainly due to necessity, workers who were able to contribute with commitment, honesty and dedication to the prosperity of the countries that welcomed them."
