Banks, Forza Italia to Salvini: "We are absolutely opposed to new levies. And we must stop making announcements that scare investors." The Italian stock exchange is igniting debate within the government.

"Banks in Italy are already heavily taxed, with an additional rate compared to all other businesses." Raffaele Nevi, national spokesperson for Forza Italia and deputy group leader in the Chamber of Deputies , interviewed by Affaritaliani , responded to the comments of Deputy Prime Minister and League Secretary Matteo Salvini , who, speaking yesterday evening at Affaritaliani 's La Piazza conference in Ceglie Messapica, Brindisi, stated that in view of the Budget Law, "banks can make a contribution to the middle class and businesses."
"Salvini's reasoning also led to an amicable agreement last year with the banking system, which, in addition to the very high taxation I mentioned, brought €3.5 billion into the state coffers. And it's a two-year agreement . We don't defend the banks or other strange things you hear and read. Forza Italia defends the right principles, namely the need not to frighten the markets with announcements of potential new taxes that would only discourage foreign investors in our country and would cause the banks' increased costs to be passed on to families and businesses, reducing their ability to provide credit, which is essential to supporting the economy. Furthermore, it would also increase costs for account holders," explains the Forza Italia representative.
Nevi finally recalls that "the agreement signed last year with the ABI, and therefore with the credit institutions, is two-year and valid for this year and next year, 2026. It was signed by Economy Minister Giorgetti with the banks following an agreed-upon solution strongly supported by Forza Italia . We, we reiterate once again, are absolutely against new levies . For us, the word extra-profits doesn't even exist. Not only that, but if we did so, it would open up legal disputes, as has already happened in the past with energy companies. We can talk to everyone to help the country's economic growth, but we absolutely must avoid announcements of possible new taxes that scare investors and cause stock market prices to plummet, also damaging savers . These spot announcements are a line we absolutely do not agree with," concludes the national spokesperson for the party led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Antonio Tajani.
