You Can't Beat Thuma's Classic Bed Frame

You Can't Beat Thuma's Classic Bed Frame

When it comes to furniture, I'm a firm believer in simplicity. That's why I'll always be a return customer to Thuma. The brand launched in 2018, and I first tried its famous bed frame in 2021. At the time, I was stunned that such a great bed frame could be built without any tools. Four years later, I feel the exact same.

In my old apartment, I had that first Thuma model in a full size. I later moved in with my husband, sold my OG Thuma, and upgraded to his king-size bed. Throughout the years, I continued to test furniture for my job, and we cycled through a handful of bed frames. None of them came damn near close to a Thuma in look or ease of assembly. Each one we tried required a complicated delivery and annoying assembly, and none ever felt sturdy enough. That's why after years of choices that never felt right, I decided to turn back to Thuma.

Why Thuma?

Since the last time I owned a Thuma, the brand has made quite a few updates to its lineup. The original bed frame used to have a removable cushion that served as a headboard. Now there's a variety of options in four wood finishes: walnut, natural, espresso, and gray. It's all customizable and interchangeable. So this time around I opted for an attached wood headboard in walnut for a classic look.

Thuma also launched another bed frame style called the Essential, where the frame lays flat on the floor. Aesthetically speaking, I prefer the monolithic look of the Essential. But living in New York City, I just can't sacrifice the storage space underneath my bed, so we stuck with the Classic. To round out the lineup, the brand even launched dressers and nightstands—you can read my review here. It's clear Thuma is carving out a big niche in the furniture world: quality products that are easy to put together and at an accessible price point.

This is the easiest bed frame you will ever put together. I can guarantee that. When I built the full-size version years ago, I did it myself in less than 20 minutes. This time around with a king size, I needed a little help. I enlisted my 15-year old nephew to do the work, and I have to admit he did most of the heavy lifting. In the end I just gave him a hand when needed, and it still only took 20 minutes.

If you're wondering how it can be put together without tools, it's all about the brand's smart and simple design. The wood is cut in a precise way that makes the pieces almost snap together and fall into place. The whole thing stands on its own, and there are custom-made screws and bolts that you just twist in to secure the whole structure. Given how seamless that all is, it's somehow still the most sturdy bed I've ever slept on. I have a giant mattress—a 16-inch one from Puffy, to be exact—and my previous bed frame could barely hold it without making noises and unsteady movements. But my Thuma Classic bed goes above and beyond in doing the job.

Storage is Absolutely Key

Aside from the whole no-tools thing, the next best feature on a Thuma bed frame is the under-bed storage it offers. The clearance comes in at nine inches; that's generous in the bed-frame world. In fact, my threshold is pretty tough, because I'm obsessed with these under-bed storage bins from Open Spaces, and the set just barely fit under my old bed frame, always snagging on the corners, which really bothered me. With the Thuma, the bins slide right under, as if they were made to go together. Speaking of that, Thuma actually makes under-bed storage accessories like the matching wood drawers and cute felt boxes—but for me, I'll stick with my Open Spaces ones, because they are really impressive.

My Final Verdict

I would 100 percent recommend this bed frame to anyone in the market for an upgrade. I will address that the price is much steeper than those of other brands out there, but I'll argue that what you're getting in return is far better quality and something long-lasting. Sure, you can snag an Ikea bed frame for half the price, but it will last you half the amount of time. Is that really worth it?

If you're still even slightly hesitant, just know that this bed frame has over 18,000 positive reviews on its website. And the fact I came back a second time around for this one says something.

One last thing: I have this little bedside tray, and it's just one of the many reasons why I love this brand. Thuma thinks of everything.
