Is <em>Peacemaker</em> Coming Back for Season 3?

The DC Universe has a hero, but we're not talking about Superman. Since DC's big creative reset with the launch of DC Studios, Peacemaker has been a big hit for both the DC brand and its exclusive home of HBO Max. But does John Cena's chrome-dome superhero have a future after the current second season? Or is this the curtain call for the Man of Peace?

In 2022, after the release of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad in theaters, Peacemaker (also created by Gunn) premiered on HBO Max. A continuation of The Suicide Squad, the series set out to follow John Cena's mercenary antagonist Christopher Smith—aka Peacemaker—as he returns home and is recruited into working as an agent for the government outfit ARGUS. The show swiftly became a cult hit, with critics recognizing Cena as a standout leading man and the series as a showcase of Gunn's creative voice. In season 2, Peacemaker stumbles upon a parallel universe where he and his family are revered superheroes. This inspires Chris to leave his old, pathetic life behind—including his friends.

Later in 2022, James Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios, alongside producer Peter Safran. Between Gunn's work on Superman and the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes that delayed work across film and TV, season 2 of Peacemaker was delayed until it finally premiered on HBO Max this past August. With the future of DC Studios looking brighter than ever, of course fans are now wondering if Peacemaker season 3 is in the cards. Turns out, that answer is a lot harder to figure out than it seems.

Here's everything we know about the future of Peacemaker, including a possible season 3.

As of right now, HBO Max has not yet renewed Peacemaker for a third season. This doesn't mean it isn't happening—it simply hasn't been announced yet, and it is unknown if it will.

Gunn is playing coy about Peacemaker's future. On September 19, Gunn responded to a fan on Threads who asked him about the potential for season 3. "I think let's get to the end of the season before you answer that question," Gunn wrote, with a thinking face emoji at the end of his reply.

Gunn's vague response leaves room for the possibility that Peacemaker season 2 ends on a conclusive note. This is supported by a recent interview from Collider with Steve Agee, who stars in the series as the desk jockey Economos. After the premiere of episode 5, Agee spoke to Collider, saying the "last three episodes" of season 2 "are so big."

"There's a lot going on," Agee said. "I'm afraid to mention anything from the episodes because they're so spoiler heavy. My hands are sweating, just treading this ground right now. I don't know what to say."

For our part, we interviewed Jennifer Holland—who stars as the rugged agent Harcourt—who also didn't disclose what's next for Peacemaker. "You have to keep watching to find out," she said.

Whether or not Peacemaker will soldier forth after season 2, it's been a hell of a ride thus far. The enthusiasm from fans indicates they're not ready for the end, even if nothing good lasts forever.
