Farewell to Franco Moschini, president of Poltrona Frau for 50 years.

He was among the architects of the transformation of a small artisan workshop in Tolentino, in the Macerata area, into one of the largest and most important industrial companies in Italian design, Poltrona Frau, which he also helped guide in its development as an industrial group aggregating other prestigious brands, until its listing in 2006.
Franco Moschini, Macerata-born entrepreneur and patron of the arts, president of Poltrona Frau for over 50 years, passed away today at the age of 91 after a long illness. He had served in the position until 2014 (the year the group was delisted) and then in an institutional capacity. "A visionary entrepreneur, a man of culture and profound understanding of the value of the region, he always knew how to combine tradition and innovation, promoting beauty in all its forms and leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations," reads the statement released by Poltrona Frau itself, whose CEO Nicola Coropulis said: "The passing of Franco Moschini represents a profound loss, both personal and collective. I had the honor of working alongside him for several years, learning every day from his clear, concrete, and always forward-looking entrepreneurial vision. Moschini transformed Poltrona Frau into a symbol of Italian craftsmanship around the world, maintaining its strong roots in the Marche region and firmly believing in the power of culture, innovation, and beauty. His legacy goes far beyond design: it is a lesson in passion, courage, and responsibility toward one's own land and one's own time.
The funeral chapel will be held at the Poltrona Frau Museum in Tolentino, open on Tuesday, July 15th, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 16th at the Fiastra Abbey in Tolentino, at 10:00 am, and will be open to the entire community.
The city of Tolentino, through Mayor Mauro Sclavi, expressed its condolences: "He was and still is one of the most illustrious names in Made in Italy. Thanks to his entrepreneurial skills and courage, Poltrona Frau, of which he was president, became a brand known worldwide as a synonym for elegance, style, and high-quality craftsmanship," said the mayor, who also remembers him as "a music enthusiast, a nature lover, a sincere friend, and a man who cared for others, as Luca Cordero di Montezemolo described him. He was the protagonist of a long period of entrepreneurial successes that led to the Poltrona Frau brand's affirmation as a global symbol of excellence."
After acquiring what was a historic brand with a classic feel, "he was able to rethink and relaunch it with a design perspective, turning it into an international cult brand. Born in Macerata and living in Tolentino by adoption, a profound lover of his homeland, Moschini was one of those entrepreneurs who made Made in Italy famous worldwide, always believing wholeheartedly in Italian taste and artisanal culture, in the art of making things with your hands," said Sclavi .
Born in Macerata on June 10, 1934, Franco Moschini was a man whose passion for beauty and quality shaped one of the most important stories in Italian design. In 1962, he married Isabella Brandi, granddaughter of Nazareno Gabrielli, founder of the eponymous company. Moschini subsequently began his long adventure at Poltrona Frau, a historic luxury furniture company. With a bold vision rooted in respect for the Marche region's artisanal traditions, he moved the headquarters from Turin to Tolentino, forging a deep connection with the region and promoting local leather craftsmanship.
Under his leadership, Poltrona Frau became an international symbol of elegance and innovation, engaging with greats in design and architecture such as Gio Ponti, Gae Aulenti, Ferdinand Porsche, and Michele De Lucchi. The latter designed the Poltrona Frau Museum, commissioned by Franco Moschini to celebrate the company's centenary, a place where the history and future of design meet.
In 2002, Moschini founded the holding company Moschini SpA, investing in innovative sectors such as biotech, aerospace, and alternative energy, but above all promoting culture and art in his area.
Moschini was not only an entrepreneur, but also a recognized and passionate patron of the arts. In 2014, he established the Franco Moschini Foundation for the restoration of the Politeama cinema-theater in Tolentino, entrusting the project to Michele De Lucchi, transforming it into a modern creative hub.
His deep love for the Macerata region was further cemented in 2019 with the creation of the Design Terrae Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the cultural and territorial development of the upper Macerata area, and in 2024 with the opening of Interno Marche, a unique design hotel that has become a new symbol of regional excellence, aiming to draw the world's attention to Tolentino.
Recognized with prestigious awards, including the title of Knight of Merit for Labor, an honorary degree in business economics from the University of Macerata, and the Compasso d'Oro for lifetime achievement, Franco Moschini has left an indelible mark on the world of Italian design and entrepreneurship.
His philosophy, encapsulated in his words—"As an entrepreneur, I have sought to cultivate imagination, experimentation, and innovation. I have looked at history, added a dream and a healthy dose of madness without which it is unwise to live"—reveals the soul of a man who has sought and succeeded in lovingly combining tradition and innovation, roots and global vision, in a unique and inspiring journey for all.
