Bad weather also affects transport. TGV traffic between Milan and Paris suspended for days

MILAN – Scorching heat but also thunderstorms, these first days of summer are putting European cities to the test and with them also transport lines. Following the severe weather that hit the French Alps, rail connections between Paris and Milan were interrupted. They had been restored only a few months ago, after a landslide blocked the Frejus rail tunnel at the end of 2024. But even a few days after the restart in April, the convoys had stopped again due to excessive snow in the same place.
Racing only restarted in AprilSncf , the French railway company, specifies in a notice on its website that "train circulation is interrupted between Modane and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne for several days due to mudslides on the tracks. The TGV connection with Italy is therefore suspended".
At the beginning of April, Trenitalia's Frecciarossa (FS group) and the French state railways' TGV Inoui trains had resumed service after months of suspension. The French trains were running on the high-speed networks in France, but not in Italy, because, as Caroline Chabrol , general manager of Sncf Voyages Italia, explained, they are not currently approved for the national high-speed system. "They will be approved in two years when we plan to enter the free high-speed market in this country." The company intends to invest 800 million euros in the Italian high-speed network, aiming to become the third operator.
