"Tariffs? Parmigiano at 58 euros a kilo for Americans: market in danger."

Reggio Emilia, July 15, 2025 – Reggio Emilia's mayor, Marco Massari, is also taking to the trenches to oppose the tariff battle launched by US President Donald Trump . Assuming that the White House president will actually deliver on his tirades this time, the mayor of the Sala del Tricolore points out that "imposing 30% tariffs on imports from Europe represents a very burdensome and aggressive economic act, compounded by a 12-13% devaluation of the dollar; all political forces, at all levels, have a duty to take a stand. As a municipal administration, we express great concern for a region like ours, whose economic fabric relies on exports to the US as a key trade channel."

Massari, in particular , is thinking "of the agri-food sector, with Parmigiano-Reggiano and its 16,000 tons of exports overseas, Lambrusco and balsamic vinegar, among the most popular products on the American market, which would be priced at 58 euros per kilo for Americans. Furthermore, a large amount of machinery, equipment, and components for industry also leave Reggio for the US every day, with shares increasing in recent years, as well as rubber, plastic, and ceramic products, electrical appliances, quality clothing, and much more."

The mayor of Reggio Emilia then recalls that between 2018 and 2023, "the share of our province's exports to the US increased from 9.0% to 11.3%, for a total of €1,572 million, while the share of imports remained essentially stable at €71.3 million." In light of these data, Massari declares that Reggio Emilia "stands by all entrepreneurs and operators in the sectors affected by a measure that appears to be a unilateral, arrogant, and unacceptable act, and calls on the government and all national and European institutions to provide a decisive, coordinated, and cohesive response."
