Former Cork Star Takes Australian Media By Storm With Sensational Interview

Former Cork dual star turned AFL defender Mark Keane has taken the Australian media by storm with a brilliant interview after the South Australian Showdown.

The 25-year-old Corkonian, who now plays for Kuwarna (Adelaide Crows), was celebrating his side's 85-84 win over (Yartapuulti) Port Adelaide in a fiercely contested South Australian derby, when he whipped out a phrase GAA players the length and breadth will have heard at some point.

Last weekend's win only added to Keane and The Crows' already stellar start to the season, which has seen them claim six wins in their opening nine games and move to fifth on the AFL Ladder.

Mark Keane delivers brilliant interview after AFL win

Speaking after his side's win in Adelaide, Keane wasn't in the mood to overcomplicate affairs for Fox Australia's Super Saturday coverage, simplifying winning games down to one simple factor - winning the ball.

The former Mitchelstown GAA man also cracked out a classic saying that has been screamed by passionate GAA coaches all over this island, telling viewers that he and his teammates put their heads where others wouldn't put their feet.

That's what we're here for is playing footy and have a good brand of footy and just whoever wins the contest is footy and wins the footy will win the game, and I'd like to think that we put our heads where you wouldn't put your shoes so we're very happy with that.

That’s our Keaney ☺️

If winning footy games is all about winning the Sheridan, well then Mark Keane's role in last weekend's win can't be underestimated.

With the game in the mixer, just four points separating the sides and 90 seconds left on the clock, Keane went out on a limb and came up with an astonishing defensive mark to deny Port Adelaide a chance at what would've been a game-winning goal. It's a catch that dominated Australian headlines all weekend and has seen Keane lauded in all corners of the country.

"I just went back with the flight and it fell into my lap."

Adding context to the magnitude of the mark and just how impressive it was, Graham Cornes, one of the game's most prolific commentators, described it as a moment 'they will still be speaking about in 20 years’ time. It's the stuff that legends are made of.'

Keane, who was previously represented Cork in both football and hurling, moved Down Under in 2019, where he signed for AFL side Collingwood. After two years there and a brief return to Ireland, the Corkonian signed with The Crows where his game has reached all new heights.

While the 2024 season saw Keane's steely skill set impress, his contributions at the start of this season have proved invaluable to a Crows side who are outperforming nearly all the traditional powerhouses in the league and competing at the very top of the ladder.
