Anna Geary Had Perfect Response After Old Skorts Video Resurfaced On Twitter

The skorts debacle rages on in the camogie world, with pandemonium and games called off as players simply ask for common sense to prevail.

Introduced in 2003 as an alternative to skorts, the requirement for players to wear them has come under increasing pressure as the years have ticked by, with many citing discomfort while wearing the skorts.

Everything has come to a head in recent weeks, with the Leinster semi-final first threatened with abandonment after Dublin and Kilkenny emerged in shorts. The game only proceeded when both teams changed back into skorts.

Then, after an announcement that a Special Congress would convene on the issue, the Munster final between Waterford and Cork was farcically deferred when both teams announced their intention to wear shorts.

It has justifiably brought great frustration from the camogie world, with players merely asking for the choice to wear shorts, not to banish skorts from the game altogether.

A video posted to Twitter this week showed inter-county players at the launch of the 2013 All-Ireland camogie championship in Croke Park asked a simple question - "Skorts or shorts?"

Skort debate.. from 2013!

'Skorts or Shorts' was the simple question.

Many players, including Cork legend Anna Geary, opted for skorts, with Geary saying, "Skorts, I think, to maintain femininity in the game."

As the clip gained traction on social media on Tuesday evening, Geary responded to clarify her comments and admit that her position had changed in the 12 years since.

Anna Geary takes to Twitter to clarify stance on skorts issue

In a series of replies, four-time All-Ireland champion Anna Geary admitted that the intervening years had seen her stance on skorts in camogie change.

Just so there is no confusion, as the current skort debate rages on, what I support is choice!! It’s not about siding with one or the other. 12 years ago, (in an older design of the skort might I add), this formed part of my opinion, but a lot has happened since then.

For starters, I’ve done a documentary on “why girls quit sport” & seen first hand the drop out rates because of gear. It is a real barrier when it comes to keeping girls & women in sport. This conversation around skorts/ shorts is not about what one person thinks (or thought)

It’s about listening to what the majority of players want now. We can never choose the ‘look of gear’, or tradition over the interest of players and the retention of players. And isn’t that the great thing about opinions, you have the freedom to change them.

It was a measured response from Anna Geary, who perfectly explained why allowing players this simple choice is so important.

Geary's changed stance also spoke volumes on how attitudes towards this issue have changed, with the Cork icon admirably admitting that she had grown to understand more of the wider problems surrounding the requirement to wear skorts.

And that is the core issue - there is not a problem with any camogie players being in favour of wearing skorts, as some inter-county stars have stated to be their preference. All that players are asking for is the right to choose between skorts and shorts.

One can only hope that a sensible solution is reached in the coming weeks.
