As expected, Spaniard Mikel Landa and Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard, who crashed heavily a few kilometers from the finish line during the first stage, are out of the rest of this Giro. The Frenchman has a broken collarbone, while Soudal's leader has a stable fracture of his 11th thoracic vertebra.
Provisional time trial leader Ethan Hayter gave his impressions to Eurosport: " I was better today than during the reconnaissance. At the beginning of the race, I was struggling, but in the end it worked out. Losing Mikel Landa is terrible, because it was a goal for him. But we'll try to do our best."
With six riders having already finished the course, it is the British rider Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step) who has the best time at 16 minutes and 21 seconds, ahead of the Dutch rider Zijlaard.
Mads Pedersen leads the overall standings after his sprint victory in the first stage (Durrës - Tirana). The top five finishers are:
- 1. Mads Pedersen (DAN), Lidl-Trek, at 3h36'24"
- 2. Wout Van Aert (BEL), Visma Lease a Bike, at 0"
- 3. Orluis Aular (VEN), Movistar, at 0"
- 4. Francisco Busatto (ITA), Intermarché-Wanty, at 0"
- 5. Thomas Pidcock (GBR), Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, at 0"
Romain Bardet is 16th while David Gaudu is in 24th place.
Like the Grand Départ in Hungary in 2022, the organizers have kept the same ingredients, namely a short time trial from the second day (13.7 km in Tirana). From Skanderbeg Square to the area around the Congress Center, the runners will take the wide boulevards of the Albanian capital. High average speeds are therefore to be expected from the solo effort specialists, despite three U-turns to negotiate. There will be a total of 13 bends with the small Sauk hill (1.2 km at 5.7%) in the middle of the course.
Interviewed this morning on the sidelines of the time trial stage, Mads Pedersen admitted that he had not worked too hard specifically for this type of stage . "Since Paris-Nice, I've been on my time trial bike twice, I've focused more on the classics. It's going to be tough, I don't know the route at all."
The first ten riders have already started their time trials, including the blue jersey for best climber, Belgian Sylvain Moniquet. Note that Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease) will start at 4:53 p.m., ahead of the pink jersey, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), who will set off at 4:56 p.m.
