Boulogne, third in the National, did not carry any weight in their Stade de la Libération against the 16th-placed team in Ligue 2, who took a significant advantage before the return leg on Sunday (5 p.m.) in Auvergne.
After Boulogne opened the scoring through Théo Epailly (23rd), Clermont quickly reacted through Ousmane Diop (31st), before Yoan Koré (79th) and then Famara Diedhiou (85th) gave them a comfortable lead.
The defeat is all the more frustrating for the Pas-de-Calais club as a draw against Châteauroux on the last day (1-1) deprived them of direct promotion to Ligue 2. Boulogne finished third behind Nancy and Le Mans.
Clermont, at the end of a difficult season in L2, could do no better than 16th place, synonymous with a play-off, one point ahead of Martigues (17th).
With this away victory, Clermont is well on its way to avoiding a second relegation in two years. The club was still in Ligue 1 during the 2023-2024 season, finishing last.
