She is the first woman to receive this distinction. On April 29, Cathy Quantin-Nataf, a professor at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, received the Runcorn-Florensky Medal for her research on Martian geology. Awarded by the EGU (European Geoscience Union), this distinction recognizes her innovative research on the geology of the planet Mars, including that carried out at the Lyon geology laboratory.

Through her research, Cathy Quantin-Nataf has highlighted environments that once harbored liquid water by elucidating the mechanisms and chronology of the deposition of aqueous sediments on Mars. She is also recognized worldwide for her participation in international space missions. For example, she participated in the Mars 2020 mission and the Perseverance rover mission led by NASA. She will soon be involved in the future ExoMars rover mission led by ESA.

Alongside her research, Cathy Quantin-Nataf teaches at the University of Lyon 1. Committed to promoting the place of women in science, she says: "I am very proud to be the first woman to receive this distinction, and I hope that it will pave the way for many others. The issue of the place of women in scientific careers is particularly close to my heart."
