War in Ukraine: Macron and the Europeans want to stay in the game

On the eve of a trip to the White House with Volodymyr Zelensky and numerous other European officials, Emmanuel Macron asserted that Vladimir Putin did not want peace but the capitulation of Ukraine.
By Pierre MaurerOn the eve of his departure for Washington , Emmanuel Macron offered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky clear support. On Sunday, at the end of a videoconference meeting with the " coalition of the willing," bringing together several European heads of government allied with Kiev, the head of state laid down Europe's red lines with Vladimir Putin , the Russian president. On Friday evening, the latter set foot on American soil, appearing alongside Donald Trump to call for a "peace agreement" in Ukraine.
"Do I think President Putin wants peace? If you want my firm conviction, no. He wants Ukraine to surrender," Emmanuel Macron retorted to the American president, who had rallied to Russian semantics. From Brégançon, the French president once again said he wanted "a robust, lasting peace, that is, one that respects international law, (...) that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries."
