At one time or another, we've all tossed a bag of old clothes into a textile recycling bin like the ones you find in parking lots. Except this summer, some bins were no longer accessible. Shortly after July 14, the Le Relais association, a major player in textile collection in France, announced that it would no longer collect its white containers. The reason? Its failing business model, insufficient subsidies to ensure the profitability of sorting lines that employ people in integration programs. And opportunities in the African market, the drop-off point for everything that Europe no longer wants or doesn't yet know how to recycle, are less flourishing than in the past.
