Singapore 's ruling party won the general election Saturday, May 3, according to official results released early Sunday, giving Prime Minister Lawrence Wong the clear mandate he sought from voters. His long-ruling People's Action Party crossed the 49-seat threshold to form a majority government in the wealthy South Asian island nation's 97-seat unicameral parliament.
Shortly after the victory in his district, Lawrence Wong, 52, beaming, thanked his supporters gathered at Singapore's Central Stadium for giving him a "strong mandate" to lead Southeast Asia's largest economy. "We thank you once again for this strong mandate and we will honor it," he said.
Some 2.76 million Singaporeans voted Saturday in a parliamentary election that would provide the first major test for the prime minister, whose party has ruled the country since 1959 and holds a vast majority of seats in Parliament. In office since May 2024, Lawrence Wong hoped to emerge from the election stronger and better equipped to address the uncertain global economic situation.
