Ostermoor Makes Buying a Good Mattress Ridiculously Simple

To stand out in the mattress market is near impossible. Esquire's shopping team would know this because we've made a point to test every one of these direct-to-consumer mattress brands, and we've made a point to test as many models as possible from each. I've slept on Saatva's most popular model. I've tested the budget Casper, which has now turned into a different bed called The Cloud One. I've tested plenty from the luxury mattress category—like a giant, unwieldy Purple RestorePlus. I've advised on our other editors' mattress journeys, and I've put untold hours into the big new Esquire Sleep Awards.

What has this taught me? Mostly, that the differences between mattresses are minuscule, and if you're reading the AI-generated descriptions on all these websites, it's going to be hard to decipher the differences. The trick is finding one brand that works for you and that's where we come in with our testing expertise. As for me, I've tested the Purple and its GelFlex grid—which I, surprisingly, loved. Other editors have loved the Four Seasons lineup of hotel-chic mattresses, and of course, Saatva's famous white glove delivery.

The more we test mattresses, the more we realize what we actually want is simplicity. The mattress needs to be great, and the buying process needs to be simple. I think Ostermoor—the topic of this review—understands that more than any other brand on the market. And to top it off, it's got a 170-year history other DTC brands could only dream of.

The 170-year history thing might seem like a gimmick, but it's not. Ostermoor was founded in 1853 in downtown Manhattan as a little family-run horsehair mattress maker. It's changed hands, and sure, this current iteration of Ostermoor is a direct-to-consumer rebrand that's not dissimilar from the big-wigs of the DTC mattress world. But the brand is still very much a family operation. I met the current owner, Amy Ding, who bought the brand and re-launced it with her father in 2024—Ding and her father make up the entire ownership structure. These mattresses are not focus-grouped to death. Instead of doing the normal rebrand, white-labeling, and introduction of dozens of "unique" mattress models, they built on the brand's expertise and simplicity. They kept the same Ostermoor-owned factory in Massachusetts, and they kept the lineup curated. There's three mattress and three down accessories—pillow, topper, duvet. If you care for accessories, the down mattress topper won an Esquire Sleep Award in 2025.

The lineup is simple, which allows the brand to really perfect the mattresses it makes. I've tried them all, and every model is divine. But generally, I judge a company on its entry-level mattress. It's the hardest to get right under that $2,000 budget (in a queen size) that makes it competitive. I've spent a few months sleeping on The Elizabeth, and it's pure bliss.

Firstly, Ostermoor focuses more on its coils than most modern mattresses. Most brands hide the supportive coil base under a lot of foam and latex, which is funny because it's the coils that determine how a bed performs over the course of its lifespan. Here, you get Ostermoor's encased springs, which are then welded into sets of four and set all throughout the base of the bed. It creates these sort of four leaf clover shapes that work as combined coils. It makes the nightly sleep experience more even, and it'll help the mattress last longer than the competition. The Elizabeth has the brand's lowest coil count, but my wife and I have found it perfect for our setup. The bed is comfortable but easy to move, which is a must for us during this period of our life where we're stuck renting apartments. Ostermoor calls this a firm mattress, but I think it has a nice bit of sink-down. An Ostermoor mattress feels classic in a way I didn't think I'd love as much as I do. Because it's so focused on coils and not filler foams, it feels like a traditional luxury innerspring.

That also means, the Ostermoor upgrades are simple. Instead of selling you a different foam, it's selling you more coils, and that has a direct impact on how luxe the bed feels. If you can afford, the higher coil count beds—the Park (2500 coils) and the Bedford (5500 coils)—are upgrades worthy of a master bedroom. I did showroom-style tests for each, and they were divine. Though if you're on a budget, the Elizabeth (1000 coils) that I've been sleeping on is just as good as the Saatva Classic that costs about the same.

What sets Ostermoor apart for me are the small touches, though. In other mattresses, the latex and foam comfort layers are stuffed inside with everything else. Here, Ostermoor's latex-foam blend layer is more like a topper. You can clip it on and off of the mattress. To keep our mattress fresh, my wife and I regularly flip and rotate our topper. You also get the small touch of a mattress that actually looks good. Ostermoor, in keeping with brand tradition, uses a cotton shirting stripe as the mattress ticking. It's small, and for 95 percent of the mattresses life you don't see it. But on laundry days, when the sheets are off the bed, it does make you feel proud of your purchase. You weren't sold a hyper-optimized mattress dreamed up by a numbers-crunching executive. You bought something made by hand, something they cared enough about to make beautiful.

That, in a nutshell, is everything going on at Ostermoor. I love it. I love the Elizabeth I've been sleeping on, and I love that if I wanted a nicer version of it, I would just go up the lineup. I really cannot overstate how refreshing a good-better-best lineup is in the world of mattress buying today. I would put this new Ostermoor—especially with its 100-night return window—up against any of the DTC mattresses Esquire has reviewed thus-far. If you're unhappy with the world of shitty foam mattresses, I encourage you to trust your sleep to a 170-year-old brand. You'll be surprised how find out it's better than the new ones.
