Love Lives of WNBA Stars: Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart and More

When it comes to shooting your shot with a WNBA player, you best come with skills.
"It gets a little heated," Caitlin Clark told Fieldhouse Files in September 2024 of her competitive late-night hoops sessions with boyfriend Connor McCaffery. "I definitely outshoot him more than he outshoots me, but he tries to think otherwise."
Yet there's no one the Indiana Fever point guard would rather bounce ideas off of than McCaffery, who, like her, played ball for University of Iowa and is now an assistant coach at Butler University in Indianapolis.
Well, he didn't exactly play like Clark, who went No. 1 in the 2024 WNBA draft. Nor did anybody else, for that matter, and McCaffery certainly recognizes his girlfriend's skills—as an athlete and as a partner.
"You have an incredible ability to inspire and lift up those around you, and I am lucky to learn from you every day," he wrote on Instagram, wishing her a happy 23rd birthday Jan. 22. "Thank you for always being you...I love you."
And while she sweetly noted to McCaffery when he turned 27 on July 13 that he makes every day better, her trolling on his post marking his first anniversary with the Butler Bulldogs a week later was nothing but net.
In response to his carousel of pics, she wrote, "your editing and cropping skills r really good." (Then she grabbed the offensive rebound and shot again, posting two blue hearts.)
Hey, a little trash talk makes the heart grow fonder.
Answering a literal grab bag of questions in a 2023 Big Ten Network TikTok, McCaffery pulled out a picture of Clark and cracked, "This looks like somebody who can't guard me. That's all I'm going to say."
Still, he added, "I'm not even gonna lie, she's a legend...The range is unlimited and, yeah, she can hoop a little bit."
But while basketball plays center in their relationship, neither of them is crowding the paint when it comes to pointers.
"More than anything he's just very supportive," Clark said, "and kinda just lets me do my thing and that's something I really appreciate about him."
Another stat on McCaffery's depth chart? "He's very honest," she noted. "He definitely tells me when I'm wrong, too, and that's something I appreciate as well."
Now that's the sort of teamwork that prevents relationship turnovers.
