United States: Former Fox News anchor confirmed as Washington prosecutor

The U.S. Senate confirmed former judge and television personality Jeanine Pirro 's nomination for the top U.S. attorney general in Washington on Saturday, making her the latest Fox News anchor to be nominated by Donald Trump for high office. She was nominated by a vote of 50 to 45 to become U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, after President Donald Trump urged the Republican-dominated Senate to work this weekend to approve her nominations.

In May, the television-loving president, who has drawn heavily from the pool of conservative media hosts to recruit members of his administration, named Jeanine Pirro as acting U.S. Attorney in the federal capital. The fiery 74-year-old former prosecutor from Westchester, New York, was described by President Trump as "in a class of her own."

She made a name for herself hosting several television shows, including "Justice with Judge Jeanine," which aired for 11 years on Fox News, the conservative favorite. With her position as the nation's top prosecutor, Jeanine Pirro joins the ranks of other recruits for top positions at 24-hour news networks.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth co-hosted "Fox & Friends Weekend," and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was a reality TV contestant and co-host on Fox Business. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Jeanine Pirro "should never be a permanent U.S. Attorney."

Durbin cited Jeanine Pirro's promotion of conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, which Trump lost to Joe Biden. She was one of the celebrity anchors named in a defamation lawsuit filed by voting machine maker Dominion, which resulted in Fox News paying a whopping $787.5 million to settle the lawsuit. Pirro has authored several books in support of Donald Trump.
