Tourism in Lot-et-Garonne: the curiosities of the banks of the Lot

In summer, the river is the ideal place to cool off and stroll along the banks, home to amazing flora and fauna.
The "wildest part of the Lot is located between the Casseneuil bridge and the entrance to Villeneuve-sur-Lot," says Annibal Fereira, a river enthusiast. The banks there are very inaccessible, an ideal context for the regeneration of water and environments. An area that reveals the secrets of unexpected flora and fauna to the most patient visitors aboard their canoes.
Bananas and TurtlesBanana trees are the first curiosity along the riverbanks. Probably grown from stumps thrown into the water by individuals, they have been gradually taking root along the banks in recent years, like the five-meter banana tree that grew under the Casseneuil bridge. "The fact that these plants persist is a sign of climate change," says Annibal Fereira. Since the water no longer freezes in winter, "a microclimate has been established along the banks of the Lot."
These new environmental conditions are favorable to the development of an astonishing fauna. Curious visitors can "spot turtles" in places kept secret by Annibal Fereira, who prefers to guarantee surprises for visitors and tranquility for the animals. Released into the water by individuals, the turtles have adapted to their new environment until they reach adult size. The fauna of the Lot and its surroundings is also very rich in the nature reserve, between Fongrave and Sainte-Livrade. Visitors regularly encounter swans, carp, and kingfishers.
The “Canoe-Cave” tripThe Lot River is full of small waterfalls and hidden springs along its banks. Often created by tributaries, they are easy to discover by canoe and offer a refreshing setting for walkers. River tourism has developed thanks to the river's water sports centers and is now innovating with local producers. The " Canoë-Cave " project offers a chance to discover the Domaine Lou Gaillot. After a trip on the water, visitors disembark in the vineyards for a tasting with winemaker Gilles Pons.
