Italy: How the country saved its factories

Italy is very successful in its reindustrialization policy, with specialized regions like Piedmont, which specializes in faucets.
On the shores of Lake Orta in northern Italy lies one of the country's most successful industries: the valve industry. Here, 250 companies employ 12,000 people, manufacturing valves and taps that are exported worldwide. Almost all of them are thriving SMEs.
SMEs have become hyper-competitive, notably because they are grouped together and work together despite the competition. These are called industrial districts, and there are around 150 of them in Italy, in Lombardy for furniture, in Bologna for plastic packaging, in Tuscany for tanning, and in Puglia for fruit and vegetable growing. Working together, they find the most suitable solutions to their problems. Today, Italian industry has three times more robots than in France. Last year, the country became the fourth largest exporter in the world.
