Where does our tax money go?

Each year, income tax constitutes a significant portion of government revenue , accounting for more than a quarter of the total. However, other tax sources, such as value-added tax (VAT), bring in more. Next come corporate income tax and specific taxes, such as the domestic consumption tax on energy products. But once this money is collected, how is it distributed?

Out of 1,000 euros collected by the State:

Social protection ( €561 including €253 for pensions and €201 for health), education ( €88 ), operation of public administrations ( €66 ), support for economic activities ( €59 ), transport and public facilities ( €50 ), debt service ( €31 ), defence ( €31 ), research ( €30 ), culture and leisure ( €26 ), security ( €25 ), environment ( €17 ), infrastructure ( €11 ) and justice ( €5 ).
