Where to begin? With the beauty of the Persian language? With the precise and restrained acting of the actors, who admirably express the way in which the inhabitants of Tehran live in a society under permanent emotional control? With the humor of the main duo, Ali and Morteza, theater actors reduced, due to the lack of funding for their play, to playing roles in hoaxes organized by a detective agency in exchange for money? With the subtlety of the screenplay by creator Nima Javidi? Or with the feat of creating and maintaining such a series in the land of the mullahs?

Review of “The Actor”, miracle(s) in Tehran

After a delicate and surprising first season that earned it the Grand Prize in the international competition at the Séries Mania festival in 2023, "The Actor" returns stronger. Extended, the series now unfolds over nine 50-minute episodes and continues its story of the tribulations of two friends in a society of chiaroscuro where each must play a role to rise socially in a bled-dry country or simply to be able to live a love story.

In this, the series recalls both the truculence of 1960s Italian comedies that featured likeable duos of idiots and Shakespearean theater, especially when it gives substance to the ghosts that pass through it. If the gods of television exist and read us, let them extend this series with a new season.

“The Actor - S.2” , Iranian series by Nima Javidi (2024). With Navid Mohammadzadeh, Ahmad Mehranfar. 9 episodes. (Available in replay until August 7, 2026 on Arte.tv).
