While France is enjoying a particularly mild spring and mostly sunny weather, Tuesday, April 29, promises to be more unsettled across parts of the country . While temperatures remain generally high, atmospheric instability is disrupting the day in several regions in the southeast and east .

Positioned off the coast of Portugal, a low-pressure system is already beginning to disrupt weather conditions. The sunshine is temporarily giving way to more threatening skies, with locally strong thunderstorms.

Localized thunderstorms in the afternoon

The first thunderstorms are expected to appear in the early afternoon, mainly in the Alps, the Jura and the Auvergne . Threatening clouds will quickly appear before giving rise to sometimes intense downpours, accompanied by thunderclaps . If the storms remain localized, they risk spilling over into the neighboring plains, particularly the departments located east of the Rhône. Some thunderstorms are also possible in Corsica, particularly in the northwest of the island and in the mountains, as well as in the eastern Pyrenees.

At the same time, the wind will also hit the south of the country . The Autan wind will significantly strengthen in the Midi-Toulousain and Tarn, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h in the evening in the most exposed areas . A pre-storm situation typical of the season, heralding a potentially more turbulent weekend.

Despite this instability, the mild weather will persist. This Tuesday, temperatures will frequently reach 23 to 26°C across a large half of the country , from the southwest to Brittany. The mercury will climb even higher at the end of the week, with highs expected between 26 and 28°C on Thursday, May 1st and Friday, May 2nd. Summer conditions before the expected return of more widespread stormy weather this weekend, according to Météo-France forecasts.

More than 500 lightning flashes recorded in nearly six hours in Aveyron

This Monday, April 28, Aveyron experienced a particularly intense storm. Between noon and 6 p.m., 511 lightning strikes were recorded in the department by Keraunos, the French Storm and Tornado Observatory, reports CentrePresse.fr .

The peak of activity was reached at 4 p.m., with 163 strikes in a single hour. Moyrazes was the most struck commune with 18 lightning strikes, followed by Clairvaux-d'Aveyron, Colombiès, and Grand-Vabre. Other towns such as Causse-et-Diège, Rieupeyroux, and Balsac were also affected. Nationally, Aveyron ranked sixth among the departments most struck by lightning that day.
