Spain: On the run for 32 years, Messaoud B., a murderer of Algerian origin, was found in prison by the Lyon police. He had stabbed another Algerian man to death with 51 stab wounds in a drug trafficking case.
A long-term escape. Lyon police officers from the Fugitive Individuals Search Group (GRIF) have found a man wanted for murder for 32 years in Spain, according to a report from Le Progrès confirmed to Le Figaro. Now in his sixties, Messaoud B. was sentenced to thirty years in prison for murder by the Aix-en-Provence Assize Court in 2021.
He was found guilty of stabbing a 36-year-old man 51 times on the night of July 3, 1993. An argument reportedly broke out over drug trafficking in the Le Massilia bar, run by a relative of Messaoud B., then 31. The victim was from the same village in Algeria as his killer. The murderer was quickly identified but managed to escape.
He is believed to have lived for the past three decades in northern Spain, in the Lloret del Mar region, engaging in small-scale drug trafficking, alternating between periods in prison and being homeless. He had been wanted by Interpol since his French conviction.
It was finally in prison that investigators were able to find him, in the Catalan town of Figueras where he was being held. Having no DNA, fingerprints, or even photos, investigators had to proceed meticulously based on a simple tip received in 2023.
