Burgundy Franche-Comté. Business failures: the upward trend is confirmed in Saône-et-Loire

Burgundy Franche-Comté. Business failures: the upward trend is confirmed in Saône-et-Loire

Allianz Trade, the world leader in credit insurance, has published its latest study on business failures in France during the first quarter of 2025. It details the key figures in a press release.

"18,105 bankruptcies were recorded in France in the first quarter of 2025 (+2% vs. Q1 2024). According to Allianz Trade, after a peak of more than 66,100 bankruptcies recorded in France in 2024, a new historical record of bankruptcies is expected in 2025, aggravated by the risk of a trade war triggered by the United States."

On the other hand, bankruptcies are down in Bourgogne Franche-Comté in the first quarter, but not in all departments or in all sectors. "Year-on-year, we are seeing a decline in business bankruptcies in the region: 577 business bankruptcies were recorded in the first quarter of 2025, a decrease of -3% compared to Q1 2024 after an increase of +7% over the whole of 2024 and +37% in 2023.

As for the year 2024, however, we observe a great heterogeneity of departments in this first quarter of 2025 with a double-digit increase in Nièvre (+24% vs Q1 2024) and in Saône-et-Loire (+15%) while three departments record a double-digit decline compared to the first quarter of 2024: Côte-d'Or and Yonne (-16%) and Doubs (-14%).

139 failures in Saône-et-Loire

"However, in terms of the number of insolvencies, Saône-et-Loire (139) and Côte-d'Or (117) are the most affected departments, together representing 44% of business insolvencies in the Bourgogne Franche-Comté region. The trend is upwards for the Saône-et-Loire department, whose insolvencies have been increasing for several years (+8% in 2023, +9% in 2024 and still increasing in this first quarter of 2025), unlike Doubs and the Territoire de Belfort, which are seeing the number of insolvencies decrease after a sharp increase in 2023."

Services, businesses and construction most affected

"Over the past 12 months, the three main sectors most affected by insolvencies in the region remain services (31% of the region's total insolvencies), trade (24%) and construction (20%). Accommodation/catering comes in 4th place (13%). However, the first quarter of 2025 has been favourable for a majority of sectors, with a year-on-year decline, particularly for accommodation/catering and trade, but four sectors have recorded an increase in insolvencies: business services, personal services, real estate and information/communication."
